'My love for Wild Dogs began a long time ago...'
says Dr Niel Grundling, Art Lover and owner of 'Painted Dogs' by Peter Pharoah.
We met Dr Niel unexpectedly through the magic of the internet when he contacted us to find out if we had any wild dog originals available after seeing Peter's artworks on the web.
After sending him pictures of what we had, we received a message saying that he'd like to come and take a look and a few days later, Dr Niel and his wife were on their way to meet the wild dogs in 'person' at the most unlikely location of the Dune Beach House, a luxury guesthouse on Wilderness beach. (not usually a place you would find Wild dogs!)
The instant Dr Niel walked through the door and laid eyes on the painting, he knew it was perfect for the spot he had in mind and his wife, Nanette commented that it was 'even better in real life'.
'Meeting my clients is always such a joy, as it is an opportunity get to know them and talk about my artistic process, we also usually discover a mutual passion for our amazing African wildlife and bushveld. It's wonderful to be able to share stories about our most unforgettable wildlife encounters and experiences in the bush.'
After spending his school years in Namibia, Dr Niel Grundling completed a BSc degree at the University of Pretoria in 1979 with main subject of Zoology under the late Prof Fritz Eloff.
Following an illustrious career spanning decades and covering a range of passions from head of zoology at Pretoria University, to serving on both the SA & International Rugby Board and also serving as chairman of the National Parks Board for many years, Fritz Eloff passed away in 2013, aged 93.
His leadership was a great inspiration to Dr Niel and it was as a result of time spent in the Kruger Park working with Professor Eloff that his passion for African Wild Dogs was born.
Later, Dr Niel left the world of wildlife behind as he moved to Stellenbosch to study and graduate as a dentist in 1985, where he specialized in Prosthodontics, obtaining his MChD Cum Laude in 1992.
Dr Grundling, who is in full time private practice in Port Elizabeth, presented numerous lectures throughout South Africa on a wide range of topics concerning prosthodontics.
Despite his busy practice, Dr Grundling and his wife, Nanette still manage to find time to take regular trips to the Kruger Park to see his much loved Wild Dogs. His other passions include photography, IT, running, rugby, camping and fishing.
