Nkosisana by Peter Pharoah

With this artwork I wanted to capture the indomitable spirit of the many courageous women of Africa who have fought for their identity in an everchanging world.

"It would be good for us Africans to accept ourselves as we are and recapture some of the positive aspects of our culture."
Wangari Maathai

Although this is not a portrait of her, I was inspired by the warmth, enthusiasm and passion of Nobel prize winner and visionary, Wangari Maathai, who worked tirelessly to bring about change for the women of Africa and was an inspiration to many.

Wangari Maathai was born in Nyeri, a rural area of Kenya (Africa), in 1940 and was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. In 1977, in response to the needs of rural Kenyan women who reported that their streams were drying up, their food supply was less secure and that they had to walk further and further to get firewood for fuel and fencing, she established the Green Belt Movement.

The Green Belt Movement is an environmental organisation that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods by working together to grow seedlings and plant trees to bind the soil, store rainwater, provide food and firewood, and receive a small monetary token for their work. Wangari Maathai was a pioneer from an early age and in many spheres that focussed on better environmental management, community empowerment, and livelihood improvement using tree-planting as an entry point.

*Nkosisana means Queen in Zulu.
