Zena Presley Debut Collection 2015

Zena Presley, talented Syrian born designer’s signature style has been established through collaborating with international artists to create unique prints and patterns that are inspired by her affection for cultural diversity; creating striking pieces that are certain to add flair to any summer wardrobe.

We sat down to chat to her a little about what inspired her to create a range of designer clothing that blurs the boundaries between art and fashion in a new and exciting way.

I have loved art since I was a kid, and I shared this love with my mother, who is also a big art enthusiast. I have also always loved fashion and I would try to stand out in the way I dressed by looking for statement pieces that had a story behind them.

When I was younger I would always experiment with my own wardrobe and try to reinvent some of my personal items, and when I had the idea to combine art and fashion it felt right, and I decided to pursue it.

Educationally, I have a financial and project management background, this experience was actually really valuable to me when I started my clothing line, as the business aspect of running your own company on a daily basis is similar among all industries.

Can you tell me a bit about what inspired you to launch the range?’

I have always had a fascination with innovative fashion and have been highly inspired by the region's acceptance and love for creativity and originality but I felt that I wanted to bring more to the fashion scene. Initially, I was inspired by a specific painting I saw, its beauty was captivating, and as beautiful as it looked on a wall, I felt that it should be portrayed in more ways and more people should be able to enjoy its beauty. That is where the idea stemmed from to combine art and fashion, and I instantly fell in love with the concept.

How you came across Peter's art?

The inspiration for my debut collection was triggered by a painting I saw of an African woman, it had a lot of strong emotion, and it intrigued me to look more into the African history and culture, and the more I saw the deeper in love I fell. During this search I came upon the beautiful works of Peter Pharoah, and I fell in love with his style of painting and how he combined colors so beautifully, I felt there was a lot of emotion and meaning behind his paintings, and that is what drew my attention the most.

Why did you choose Masai Memories to feature as part of your debut collection?

Masai Memories had a beautiful combination of color and texture and fit perfectly with my collection and the rest of the paintings I had selected. I really loved how all the colors blended together beautifully and it had a sense of serenity that was really captivating. Peter had captured the beautiful combination of a very dreamy yet realistic feel. I instantly visualized the painting as being a nice silky shirt, and it came out beautifully.

What fabrics were sourced for the Collection and where the clothing was manufactured?

I use a combination of fabrics and my main aim is to emphasize the art and all the details in the paintings, so I have chosen to go with simple silhouettes and cuts that are also very flattering to the woman wearing them. I was really particular in choosing the fabrics to make sure they portrayed the painting well and had a canvas feel while still having the volume and flow that will complement the cuts and styles.

For the Peter shirt, I used a fabric with a silk feel to give this light flow that compliments the shirt. I do the full production locally in Dubai, from the printing to the manufacturing, as it is really key to be involved in every stage of the process to make sure everything is up to standard.

What does the future hold for the Zena Presley Collection?

I have a lot of things lined up for the brand, both on the short and long term. I am planning to go beyond women’s wear as I see a huge potential in other areas. I have many ideas that I cannot wait to introduce. My ultimate goal is to be able to make an impact not only in the fashion world, but in the art world as well. As for now, I have already began my SS16 collection and will be featuring some of the renown Arab artists.
